Youth Culture

A youth subculture can be defined as something that involves a group of young people with similars beliefs, each group has symbols that they look up to, for example, in Britain during the sixties, mods liked scooters whilst rockers liked motorbikes, it is the same for the music that they like aswell, 'The real me' by The Who is a good example of a mod song and you can listen to it below.

And here is 'sympathy for the devil' by The Rolling Stones for you to compare. This is what a typical rocker would listen to.

You can hear the differences in both the songs, but what they both do for mods and Rockers is give them an identity which is important becuase as young people growing up an identity is what we all look for, we want to become the person that we will be for the rest of life, and we want people to see who we are. when these youth subcultures play this music they are expressing themselves to the rest of the world saying "Look at who we are, this is what we are about", or in the case of the Who song where he is trying to find out who is is. So the songs help give members of these subcultures an identity which is what is needed when the rest of the world seems to forget about the youth culture and what we are.
